A change in your employment status may affect your eligibility for benefits and retirement plans. Follow the steps below to understand what may change and what action you need to take.
What You Need To Do: Step-by-Step
1. Review Your New Benefit and Retirement Plan Eligibility
Your new employment status may change the benefits or retirement plans available to you. For example:
- If you move from a unionized role to a non-union role, your plan eligibility, coverage or required elections may change.
- If you move from part-time to full-time regular status, you may become eligible for benefits and retirement plans.
Benefits are administered by Manulife. If you become eligible for benefits or need to make new benefit elections, go to the Manulife website to review your options and complete your enrolment within the required enrolment period.
To help you make informed decisions, return to the Republic Services Canada Benefits home page and select the section that relates to what you need. The Health, Wellness and Money sections provide information about your benefits and retirement plans, while the Enrolment and Resources sections offer additional guidance, tools and support.
2. Enrol or Make Changes Through Manulife Within 31 Days
You must enrol in or update your benefit selections through Manulife within 31 days of your employment status change or the date you become eligible. This may include:
- Selecting or changing your health and dental coverage
- Adding or removing eligible dependants
- Reviewing any retirement plan options available because of your new employment status
If no action is taken within the 31-day window, default or limited coverage may apply, and Evidence of Insurability may be required for certain benefits.
3. Update Beneficiaries
If your benefits coverage or retirement plan participation changes, review and update your beneficiary designations for your Life and AD&D coverage and retirement plans.
Note: Beneficiary updates are completed directly through the applicable plan provider, not through Workday.
Life and AD&D: Sign in to your Manulife member account to review or update your beneficiary designation.
Retirement plans: Sign in to your Sun Life account to review or update your beneficiary designation.
