What You Need To Know

Effective January 1, 2027, permanent full-time employees who are regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week are eligible for benefits. Coverage for Life Insurance, AD&D, Dependent Life Insurance, Extended Health Care (EHC), and Dental Care begins after 30 days of continuous employment. Coverage for Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) begins after 90 days of continuous employment. Retirement plan eligibility is different. Visit the applicable retirement plan page for details.

Who Can I Cover?

You can cover your dependants. A dependant is an employee's spouse or child who is covered under the provincial plan.

Spouse
The Employee's legal Spouse, or the person who has, for at least one year, been continuously living with the employee in a role like that of a marriage partner. Only one spouse will be eligible under this plan.

Child
A child is an employee's natural or adopted child, or stepchild, who is:

  • Unmarried;
  • Not employed on a full-time basis;
  • Not eligible for plan benefits as an employee under this or any other group plan; and
  • Either under 21 years of age, or, if a full-time student at an accredited school, college or university, under 25 years of age.

A child covered under this plan, who is incapacitated due to a mental or physical disability on the date he reaches the age when he would otherwise cease to be an eligible dependant, will continue to be an eligible dependant.

What Else Should I Know?

  • You may be required to provide Proof of Health, also known as Evidence of Insurability (EOI), if you apply for coverage above the Non-Evidence Maximum (NEM). This may apply to LTD, Optional Life Insurance, and Optional AD&D Insurance. Coverage requiring EOI is subject to Manulife's approval.
  • If you and your spouse both have Extended Health Care or Dental coverage, you may be able to coordinate your benefits to reduce out-of-pocket costs. In some cases, combined reimbursement from both plans can cover up to 100% of an eligible expense. For details, visit the Manulife Member Portal.
  • If you and your spouse both work for Republic Services, you may each enrol as an employee and cover the other as a spouse. Contact Manulife if you need help understanding your enrolment or claim submission options.

If you are covered by a collective bargaining agreement, check your union contract, as eligibility and benefits might be different for each program.
