What You Need To Know
Long-Term Disability (LTD) Insurance provides a monthly income if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury. If your claim is approved, LTD benefits help replace a portion of your income after Short-Term Disability (STD) benefits end.
Long-Term Disability
You’re automatically enrolled in mandatory Long-Term Disability coverage after 90 days of employment. You pay the full cost through payroll deductions. Because you pay the premiums with after-tax dollars, approved LTD benefits are not subject to income tax.
| Waiting Period | After 26 weeks of disability |
|---|---|
| Benefit Amount | 60% of the first $3,000 of monthly earnings, plus 40% of remaining salary |
| Non-Evidence Maximum* | Maximum of $6,000 per month |
| Benefit Maximum | Maximum of $8,000 monthly |
| Length of Benefit | Age 65 or until you no longer meet the plan’s definition of disability, whichever occurs first |
| Eligibility | Available to eligible employees up to age 65. Coverage ends when an employee reaches age 65. |
*Non-Evidence Maximum: The highest monthly benefit available without providing medical evidence. If your calculated benefit is more than $6,000 per month, the additional amount — up to the $8,000 plan maximum — requires Manulife’s approval based on medical evidence.
How the Long-Term Disability Program Supports You
If your LTD claim is approved, a Manulife case manager will guide you through the claim, keep you updated, and support your recovery and return to work.
Your Benefits While on Long-Term Disability
If your LTD claim is approved, Manulife will contact you with information about continuing your Republic Services benefits and paying any required premiums.
Transitioning from STD to LTD
- Manulife will begin reviewing your claim about 8-10 weeks before your STD benefits are expected to end.
- Provide any additional information requested. Manulife will contact you or your health care provider if more information is needed.
- Wait for Manulife’s decision. LTD is not automatic and must be approved based on the plan’s definition of disability. The approval period is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary depending on the individual circumstances of your claim. If approved, benefits continue only while you meet the plan’s definition of disability, up to age 65.
- If approved, Manulife pays your monthly LTD benefit directly to you.
Contact Manulife with questions about your claim or Manulife’s decision. Contact HR with questions about your absence, pay or benefits.
Take Note!
While receiving STD or LTD benefits from Manulife, you must report any work activities or income that Manulife is not already aware of, as well as any changes to your medical condition or treatment. Other income may affect the amount of STD or LTD benefit payable.
If you are covered by a collective bargaining agreement, check your union contract, as eligibility and benefits might be different for each program.
