What You Need To Know

If your spouse or common-law partner loses benefits coverage due to termination, retirement or another qualifying reason, you may be eligible to add them to your benefits plan.

You must report the life event and submit your benefit changes through Manulife within 31 days of the loss of coverage. If you miss this deadline, the request may be treated as a late application. Coverage may be limited, delayed, subject to Evidence of Insurability, or declined.

What You Need To Do: Step-by-Step

1. Take Action Within 31 Days

Sign in to your Manulife member account and report the loss of other group coverage as a life event within 31 days of the date your spouse’s or common-law partner’s coverage ended.

Follow the prompts to:

  • Add your spouse or common-law partner as a dependant.
  • Select the eligible health and dental coverage you want.

Review your benefit selections and dependent information carefully. Submit the change and keep the confirmation for your records.

2. Provide Proof of Loss of Coverage

Manulife may require supporting documentation confirming that your spouse’s or common-law partner’s previous group benefits coverage ended. Upload any requested documentation when completing the life event.

Acceptable documentation may include:

  • A letter from the previous employer confirming the date the group benefits coverage ended.
  • A letter or statement from the previous benefits provider confirming the coverage termination date.
  • Retirement documentation confirming the date benefits coverage ended.
  • Other documentation requested by Manulife to verify the life event.
