What You Need To Know
Republic Services provides eligible employees with up to six weeks of Paid Parental Leave Top-Up following the birth, adoption or placement of a child. This benefit supplements approved EI or QPIP benefits so that your combined income is up to 100% of your regular pay during the approved top-up period.
Eligibility
To qualify, you must be a regular, non-temporary employee, have at least 90 days of employment before your leave begins, take a maternity or parental leave under applicable provincial law, and be approved for and receive EI or QPIP benefits. Interns, seasonal, casual and temporary employees are not eligible. Employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement are eligible only if their agreement provides for the benefit.
Amount & Timing of the Top-Up
Republic Services will top up your approved EI or QPIP benefits so that your combined income is up to 100% of your regular pay for up to six weeks. Part-time employees are paid based on their average hours worked during the 90 days before leave.
The top-up must be taken continuously and within 78 weeks after the birth, adoption or placement of a child. It cannot be split into separate periods. If you give birth, the top-up must begin immediately following the birth, if applicable. Once you return to work, you cannot resume unused top-up time.
Your Pay & Benefits While on Leave
During the approved six-week Paid Parental Leave Top-Up, Republic Services will continue paying you through payroll, and your regular employee benefit and pension deductions will continue.
After the Paid Parental Leave Top-Up ends, payments from Republic Services will stop, and you will continue receiving any approved EI or QPIP benefits directly from the government program.
Manulife will contact you directly regarding the continuation of your employee benefits coverage during your leave, including any applicable premiums and payment arrangements.
Republic Services Benefits will provide information about continuing pension contributions during your leave, including any applicable contribution requirements and payment arrangements.
Notifying Republic Services, Applying for Benefits & Requesting Leave
To notify Republic Services of your statutory leave, apply for government benefits and receive the Company top-up:
- Tell your manager at least 30 days before your planned leave, or as soon as possible if 30 days’ notice is not possible.
- Submit the Parental Leave Request Form to your manager at least 15 days before your leave begins.
- Apply for EI through Service Canada or for QPIP through the Québec program.
- After approval, send your EI or QPIP approval notice to Payroll. Republic Services cannot begin the Company top-up until Payroll receives this confirmation.
Plan ahead: EI or QPIP approval may take several weeks. As a result, there may be a delay before you receive your first government benefit payment and Company top-up.
If you will be adding your child to your Republic Services benefits, you’ll need to do so within 31 days of the birth, adoption or foster placement.
If you are covered by a collective bargaining agreement, check your union contract, as eligibility and benefits might be different for each program.
