Summary

All eligible employees receive Company-provided benefits, including Basic Life Insurance, Dependent Life, Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D), Short-Term Disability (STD), Telemedicine, and the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP). Eligible employees are also automatically enrolled in employee-paid Long-Term Disability (LTD) coverage.

Optional employee-paid coverage is also available, including Critical Illness Insurance and Optional Life and AD&D Insurance.

You also have the opportunity to choose the Extended Health Care and Dental coverage that best meets your needs, with Basic, Core, and Plus options available.

How your health care and dental elections work

Choose a Basic, Core or Plus option for both health care and dental. Your choices do not have to match — for example, you can choose Core health care and Plus dental — but your coverage level must be the same for both, such as Employee Only, Employee + 1, or Employee + 2 or more.

Your health care and dental elections are assessed separately. Any flex credits provided by each election are added together and allocated to your HCSA and/or WSA. If you choose Plus for health care or dental, you will make a payroll contribution for that election and will not receive flex credits for it.

When can you change your option?

  • If you choose Basic or Core, your election applies for the plan year. You can move up or down during the next benefits enrolment period, with your new coverage taking effect January 1 of the following year. You may also change your option earlier if you experience a qualifying life event.
  • If you choose Plus, your election is locked in for two years. You cannot move down during the next benefits enrolment period. A qualifying life event may allow you to update who is covered, subject to the plan rules, but does it not end the two-year Plus commitment.

How benefits may affect your taxable income

Some employer-paid benefits and flex credits may be treated as taxable benefits. The tax treatment and amount reported through payroll will depend on your benefit elections, coverage level and province of residence.

Learn more about how your benefit choices may affect your pay in the Taxable Benefits Quick Reference Guide.

If you are covered by a collective bargaining agreement, check your union contract, as eligibility and benefits might be different for each program.
