Supplemental Coverage
You can buy an extra 10% of supplemental long-term disability coverage when you’re hired, when you experience a qualifying life event, or during Open Enrollment each fall, bringing your total benefit to 60% of your base pay.
If you choose to purchase supplemental long-term disability coverage, the maximum monthly benefit of $25,000 still applies. You pay the full cost of supplemental long-term disability coverage with after-tax dollars. This means that, if you become disabled, income taxes will not apply to those benefit payments.
Note that if you would like to buy additional supplemental coverage after your initial enrollment period, you will be required to submit evidence of insurability (EOI) to our long-term disability insurance provider, New York Life.
Your Benefits and Pay While on Long-Term Disability
Once your long-term disability begins, you’ll begin to receive your pay from New York Life. Additionally, your benefits coverage with Republic Services will end. You’ll be eligible to enroll in COBRA continuation coverage. Enrollment forms will be mailed to your home address should you decide to continue your benefits with Republic Services through COBRA.
