What You Need To Know

Life can change in an instant, and when it does, your needs and benefits might shift as well. Republic Services provides the benefits and resources you need to adapt to these changes smoothly, providing support every step of the way.

Qualifying Life Events

Outside of the new hire enrollment period or the annual Open Enrollment period (which takes place each fall), you can only change your benefits if you have an IRS-defined qualifying life event. Some of the more popular examples are noted below. The deadline to make your changes is 31 days after the life event has occurred.

Getting Married

Getting Divorced or Ending a Domestic Partnership

Having or Adopting a Baby

Spouse/Domestic Partner is Losing Their Benefits

Experiencing a Death in the Family

The Rules

You may only make benefit changes that align with your qualifying life event, and you must do so within 31 days of the event.

Don’t forget that you’ll need to provide documentation to support your life event. Documentation can include things like a marriage certificate, a birth certificate, or a divorce decree. If you don’t submit your life event documentation within the required time period, your next chance to make changes will be during the next Open Enrollment period.
